In anticipation of fall data beginning its rollout with OCT22 on Monday, let’s summarize Summer 2022 this way: it was a down quarter. Summer often takes a dip in total radio listening, so the recovery from COVID-19 isn’t a straight line. Hopefully with routines restored and elections upcoming, radio listening will increase for fall, like it usually does.

Slide 1 shows total radio AQH (PUMM) is down so far in 2022 from 2021, which leads to the question “is there a news cycle or news fatigue going on?” Slides 2-4 show the annual transitions from 2019 through 2022 for full time noncommercial news stations. For this set of stations, both Drives were down in 2020, AM Drive showed the most recovery in 2021, and while the 7am hour has so far increased again in 2022, Middays are the reason that this format is down in 2022 to date.
